September 7th, 2022, marked Final Fantasy VII’s 25th Anniversary since the game was released in the U.S.
On Wednesday, the fast food restaurant wished Final Fantasy happy birthday on all it’s social medias, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
McDonalds posted a picture of Cloud, FFVII’s main character, riding a motorcycle mount with the caption, “do u need a ride to the FFVII 25th anniversary”.
McDonalds golden arches can be seen pictured behind Cloud and have immediately sparked rumors of a collab between the multinational fast food chain and Japanese Sci-Fi fantasy video game, Final Fantasy, owned and developed by Square Enix.
The Official Final Fantasy VII’s Twitter responded to McDonald’s tweet with a picture of Nanaki, also known as RedXIII, saying, “we’re lovin’ it” (an obvious reference to the brand’s slogan).
This collab has taken fans by surprise and as many have pointed out, is ironic due the the game’s anti-capitalistic theme of bringing down big evil corporations. Not even an hour before the collab was announced, Final Fantasy VII’s Official Twitter thanked fans for the 25 years and summarized the game by saying, “What begins as a rebellion against an evil corporation becomes much more.”
Much more indeed.
Square Enix has managed to turn Final Fantasy into the very thing the game warns its players against and this does not go over the fan base’s heads.
Even so, the overall reception has been positive and has left fans wondering what menu items or Happy Meal Toys might be released in the coming weeks.
On Instagram, McDonalds posted an additional photo that looks like it could be the prototype to a Cloud toy but, as of now, everything is just wishful thinking. McDonalds has given no other hints revealing whats coming to their menu besides this small teaser.
Going off previous collaborations McDonalds has done with Japanese video games, we can only assume that a Final Fantasy Happy Meal is on the way. This may include Happy Meal Collectible Toys featuring Cloud Strife and other popular FFVII characters such as Sephiroth, Aerith, and Tifa.
Whatever the case, we look forward to seeing what materia rolls out!
